Lawn Care
Before you make the commitment to have a big, beautiful
lawn, make sure you know what you're getting yourself into! All
things considered, lawn care may become the single most
time-consuming task in your yard. For those interested in
making the commitment, I offer resources on starting a new
lawn, mowing the lawn, overseeding lawns and other aspects of
lawn care. For the rest of you, I discuss one of today's most
popular lawn alternatives, xeriscaping.
Annuals and Perennials: Shade Plants and Sun Plants
Perennials are landscape plants with a variety of uses. Some
homeowners will plant them in a row, for instance, to form a
garden border. I often see some of the larger perennials, such
as peonies, used in foundation plantings or as specimens, to
supply seasonal color. Most commonly, however, we see
perennials mixed in beds, as in English cottage gardens.
Annuals, meanwhile, are often used to supplement perennials
with sustained blasts of vibrant color. Whether planting
perennials or annuals, always pay attention to sunlight
requirements.
When selecting trees for your yard, the goal should not be
simply to have a collection of great specimens, but rather to
have at least one tree per season that will add pizazz to your
landscaping. I offer examples for each of the four seasons in
these resources.
A lot of thought goes into achieving an effective landscape
design. As the discipline where gardening and art intersect,
landscape design demands both a knowledge of landscape plants'
growing requirements and an eye for arranging them. These
resources will aid beginners in choosing the optimal landscape
plants for the job, while offering ideas for their arrangement
in the yard through examples.

How You Can Help the Planet
Question: What plants are the best to plant
in rock gardens?
Answer: There's a reason they're called
rock gardens: the plants clearly share emphasis with the rocks.
That takes the pressure off the rock garden plants: they don't
need to have the showiness that we expect from standalone
plants, because their function is to complement the rocks that
surround them. We also expect rock garden plants to be
low-maintenance, and forgive them for a certain degree of
plainness in the tradeoff. The rock garden plants used to
complement the rocks should be selected largely with your
climate and other practical considerations in mind -- this will
help keep them low-maintenance.
Rock gardens in warm climates call for plants different from
those used in colder climates. If you live at high altitudes,
you might want to consider to classic alpine rock garden. But
if you live in the desert, cacti and other succulents are not
only a sensible choice, but blend in beautifully with rocks. If
your climate is warm and humid, ferns are an excellent choice;
and for a flowering plant, begonias.
In my tutorial on how to build rock
gardens , I discuss plant selection for a sample rock
garden (photos included).
CHAMBERLIN LANDSCAPING DESIGN..."AS SEEN ON THE ABC HIT
SERIES "EXTREME MAKEOVER HOME EDITION"
See our slideshow from one of
the three "one week complete makeovers" we have participated in
since February, 2006.
Put together one very run-down house, a deserving family, several opinionated designers, seven days and what do you get? The answer is - Extreme Makeover: Home Edition . The show's successful first season garnered an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Reality Program, and awards garnered during the second season include the People's Choice Award for Favorite Reality Show/Makeover and the Family Television Award for Best Alternative/Reality Program.
Winning its Sunday 8 o'clock time period in the key Adult 18-49 sales demographic in each of its first two seasons on the air, ABC's broad-appealing Extreme Makeover: Home Edition also ranked No. 1 in its hour this season among Total Viewers, across each of the adult demographics, as well as among Teens and Kids. "Home Edition" grew sharply from its first season to its second season, gaining 4.7 million viewers (15.8 million vs. 11.1 million) and 51% among Adults 18-49 (6.5/16 vs. 4.3/11).
Each episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is self-contained and features a race against time on a project that would ordinarily take at least four months to achieve, involving a team of designers, contractors and several hundred workers who have just seven days to totally rebuild an entire house -- every single room, plus the exterior and landscaping.
The lives of the lucky families are forever changed when they learn that they have been selected to have their home walls moved, their floors replaced and even their façades radically changed. The result should be a decorator's delight… if it can be done in time.
Each episode begins with team leader Ty Pennington's now-famous "Good morning!" wake-up call, when he, along with the other designers, surprises the unsuspecting family with news that their home has been chosen to receive a makeover. Then viewers witness not only the unbelievable transformation of the house, but during the final and emotional reveal, they see how the home makeover has impacted the lives of the deserving families.
The design team includes team leader and carpenter Ty Pennington, Paul DiMeo (carpentry/attitude), Paige Hemmis (carpentry/nut & bolts), Michael Moloney (interiors/glamour), Constance Ramos (building/planning), Ed Sanders (construction), Preston Sharp (exteriors/big ideas) and Eduardo Xol (landscaping), plus two new team members this season, Tanya McQueen (designer) and Daniel Kucan (designer).
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is produced by Endemol USA, a division of Endemol Holding. David Goldberg is President of Endemol USA. The series is executive-produced by Tom Forman and premiered December 3, 2003, on the ABC Television Network.

NEW LANDSCAPE EDGING!
The people who bring you Trex®
decking and railing now bring you the refined look of Trex
Landscape Edging.
The wood and plastic composition prevents moisture and insect
damage, making it ideal for edging your garden. Its textured
appearance is sure to impress even the gardener's gardener. See
for yourself.
Flexibility: Trex Landscape
Edging is extremely flexible. Staking is all that's needed to
create perfectly curved sections.
Long life: With Trex Landscape Edging, you won't find any of
the problems associated with wood. No rotting. No insect
damage. No splitting. And no cracking. It even resists string
trimmer damage.
Stays in place: Trex Landscape Edging has low thermal
expansion/contraction. And unlike plastic, it isn't prone to
buckle and heave when temperature changes occur.
Faster, easier installation: Trex Landscape Edging bends
easily without multi-layering. You'll use less material thereby
reducing installation time. And unlike plastic, creating
straighter runs is easy.
Color and sizes: Trex Landscape Eding is available in
Winchester Grey which fades to a deep rich grey to complement
any landscape. Two sizes are available: 1" x 4" and 1/2" x 4".
Each comes in 16-foot lengths.
Plant Care
Ensuring that landscape plants perform well
involves forethought, and that includes providing proper
drainage for them. "Plant care," proper, begins with how you
install landscape plants in the ground. From that point on,
there are preventive measures you can take to maximize
performance, including the use of mulch, the "unsung hero" of
landscaping. But no amount of mulch will save tender landscape
plants such as elephant ears from the ravages of winter;
they'll have to be dug up in fall and brought inside. I offer
tips on these and other plant-care topics in these resources,
including how to prune trees and shrubs.
DIY landscaping projects can greatly enhance
your enjoyment of your yard. Features such as patios and
walkways can add not only beauty, but also functionality to
your landscape. Follow the step-by-step instructions in the
resources below to learn about building simple patios and
walkways.
Building large retaining walls is not
considered a DIY project. If you need a tall wall, chances are
you have an erosion problem "waiting to happen" and need to
call on a professional. By contrast, simple terracing jobs are
excellent DIY landscaping projects for beginners. After
building small stone retaining walls, you can plant behind
them, as you would for a raised bed. I also discuss building
conventional raised beds (out of wood) below, as well as
building a sort of "raised bed" that could come in especially
handy for urban landscaping, where no garden space, per se,
exists.
Shrubs are the "workhorses" among the landscape plants, serving a number of functions in landscape design. Some shrubs are groundcovers, others are planted in rows to be trimmed into hedges, while still other shrubs are used as specimens.
